Samuel Trychin PhD, Psychologist, Educator, Author
A life dedicated to educating people who are hard of hearing and their families and friends.
Fifty-three years of being hard of hearing myself along with 25 years of providing services to people who are hard of hearing and their families have provided me with the knowledge and experience to be considered someone who understands the negative effects of hearing loss and who knows what can be done to combat them. This course presents the most important strategies and tactics for effectively dealing with hearing loss and its effects for those people who have hearing loss and for those people with whom they communicate.
Our experience indicates that effectively living with hearing loss requires:
Both facets of managing hearing loss require changing behavior and attitudes and that requires information about what to do, practice doing it, feedback about the effectiveness of one’s efforts, and, of course, sufficient time to accomplish these goals—recall that Rome was not built in a day.
Our experience in working with people who have hearing loss and their families further indicates that a minimum of 10 weeks is required to accomplish each of the two goals indicated above. Therefore, we have designed a ten-week class, titled Managing Communication Situations: What to do and what not to do, to help people accomplish the first goal of preventing/reducing communication problems. We are also offering a second ten-week class to accomplish the second goal of helping people better manage themselves.
Participants in each of these classes will receive books and dvds (or videotapes) and other resource material to facilitate learning the content and to facilitate communication with the instructor and with the other participants.
Each class meets through an on-line forum. The instructon responds personally to each question. This communication is devoted to answering questions about the week’s assignment, troubleshooting problems experienced during the week, and providing additional information.
Prior to the first class session, participants will receive, by mail, books and dvds (videotapes) and the course outline and weekly assignments.
Questions/comments can be directed to the instructor on the website at any time during the week. Instructor responses/suggestions will appear on the website at various times during the week depending on the time available to the instructor.
Starting on the first day of the class, participants will have daily access to the course website for asking question, receiving answers, and/or sharing information and experiences with fellow students.
Participants can ensure confidentiality by creating a 'user name' on the website.
At the end of each week (Sunday evenings), that week’s information will be closed, and the next week’s session will be opened.
Participants will have access to the course instructor for answers to question that may arise following the end of the class.
The cost of each class is $200.00. For that amount each participant will receive approximately $160.00 of resource material including books and videotapes that will be theirs to keep at the end of the class.
A full refund will be given prior to the beginning of the third week to anyone who decides not to continue in the course for any reason. No refunds will be given during or following the third class week. Refunds will be sent after receipt of the class materials.
